Support Your Beach

Beachlovers unite! There are dozens of ways for you to show your appreciation of one of nature’s most attractive features. What better way to give something back to the community than finding ways to support your local beach? The nice thing about giving this support is that you need not spend any money, only time and effort. Think about the different ways you can make a difference:

  • Cleaning Patrol: You can walk the beachfront and pick up what others have left behind. You can also clear driftwood and other items that have washed onto shore. Nothing ruins the enjoyment of beachfront like garbage. It’s not hard to make a big impact. Wear gloves and carry a large plastic bag to collect beach detritus. You may inspire others to join you.
  • Beach Restoration: You and your neighbors can organize a petition for a project to restore some aspect of the beach. This could include restoring sandbars, fixing deteriorating piers and jetties, perhaps adding a lifeguard station. Petitions can catch the attention of local politicians, and often can make a difference, especially if the funding request is modest.
  • Protect Turtle Nests: Ever see those turtles invade the shoreline to lay eggs? It is quite a sight. Sometimes, they can use a helping hand, especially if man-made obstacles have been placed in their way. These little creatures usually come ashore at night, so you can have an all-night party with your turtle and human friends.
  • Protect the Coral Reefs: Coral reefs are dying all around the world. Take up the cause to save them. Learn about the problem and join a group that advocates for coral preservation.
  • Lifeguard Volunteering: Do you swim well? Think about getting certified as a lifeguard. Groups like the YMCA offer lifeguard courses. Professional lifeguards are often used on public beaches, but unfortunately, budget cuts have left many beaches unprotected for significant spans of time during the day. You can help by becoming a volunteer lifeguard. Of course, you will need to meet all state and local requirements, but think of the difference you would make if you saved even one life.

Beachfront is really special. The sights, sounds and smells are unique. Millions of people flock to beaches every sunny warm day. By taking the time to support your local beach, you are helping to pass down to future generations one of the nicest aspects of existence. Check the Internet for community organizations in your area that support beaches and join up. You will be making a real difference in people’s lives.
